dial m for murder : christian dior spring 2010

if the john galliano sent his models naked down the runway, chances are most of us would still recognize the whole film noir, 1940's, lauren bacall reference, with the help of an iconic side swept hair, rolling curls and red lips.
point being, i felt like the whole collection was a bit disappointing and a thousand times too obvious and been-there-done-that. it wasn't inspiring, and prompted "of course, trench coat, of course, red lips, of course", rather than "of course!" and "why didn't i think of that?"
and even so, despite what i said, i really adore this collection. perhaps i'm being a little biased, because it is john galliano, and i have much love for the 40's era but it's fashion, so what the hell.

is it just me, or does anyone else get a very versace (what's on sasha) and georgio armani f/w 2009 (the socks, the make up, the short dresses, trench coats) vibe? nevertheless, most of what's here is spot on. i love the combination of a fluid skirt/dress under a structured coat, which makes a really strong silhouette, cinched waists and everything. and i'd kill for glitter socks now.

obviously working parallel from his last couture collection, galliano is the epic guru of mastering the art of underwear as outerwear. no one does it better than he does. it doesn't look pornographic, nor garish, and it most definitely doesn't look skanky. it's so sophisticated, it's glamorous, it's romantic with an underlining (lololololol forgive me) allure and seduction - which is exactly what lingerie should be: tempting, but not giving too much away.

things that are sort of fugly to me:

things that i would give up my hamster for:

albeit being straight-forward, galliano has also made the 1940's era of style very wearable and modern, without it being humphrey bogart walking out of casablanca. throughout this spring/summer's fashion week, it's evident that some collections are either too wearable that it's boring, or too "out there" (mario schwab), or just here nor there, but galiano's found a balance between the two.

ps: yeah, i think i'm about 3 weeks late. sorry!
